Our Name in History
The Buffalo Guards was formed from the Virginia State militia.
They were formed on November 1,1859 in Buffalo, (Putnam Co.) Virginia. Their
organizer and commanding Lt. Colonel was William E. Fife.
In April 1861, the 18th Virginia State militia was mustered
into Confederate service as the 3 Kanawha Infantry. This regiment was never
completed, so it was consolidated with the 2nd Kanawha infantry, which became
designated the 36th Virginia Infantry, Company A, and accepted into Confederate
State service on May 13, 1861. Company A, was commanded by Captain William E.
Fife.
Company A had 100 officers and men in 1861 and by 1865, they
had less then 30 men in the rank and file. The men of the 36th Virginia Infantry
had been in no less 85 engagements in 1864 alone. On April 12th, 1865 just 3
days after hearing about General Robert E. Lee’s surrender, the men of the 36th
Virginia Infantry choose to disband rather than surrender to the Federal
army. At Christiansburg, Virginia there were about 30 men in the regiment to
answer the final roll call.
